May 1st Far-left Rally in Berlin Turns Anti-semitic

Despite several police bans, the far-left NGO Samidoun’s “revolutionary May 1st demonstration” in Berlin turned into an anti-Semitic rally, according to a video shared by the German-Jewish organization Jüdisches Forum (JFDA).

In the video, radical activists can be heard shouting anti-Israel slogans, “Boycott Israel!” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!”

Berlin Police confirmed they will take legal steps against the protesters. The police had imposed numerous bans and limitations two days before the rally “for reasons of public security” to prevent such chants, including a ban on burning items like flags and puppets, as well as displaying symbols of terror organizations like PFLP, Hizb ut-Tahrir, and Hamas.

According to Berlin police estimates, the rally was attended by some 12,000 people and ended early due to fears of violent clashes with the police, according to the German newspaper Die Zeit.

Germany celebrates “Labour Day” on May 1 as a public holiday. Left-wing organizations traditionally organize demonstrations and marches all over the country, which often can turn violent.

On April 10, Israel’s Ambassador to Germany Ron Prosor slammed a rally of an estimated 500 Germans, most of whom were Muslim, which marched through two Berlin neighborhoods chanting “Death to Jews” and “Death to Israel.”

A few days later, the incident prompted Berlin’s police to ban two additional protests planned by the Samidoun group, that is a Palestinian NGO classified as a terrorist entity by Israel.

According to Israel’s National Bureau for Counter Terror Financing (NBCTF), “The Samidoun organization was designated as a terrorist organization as it is part of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and was founded by members of the PFLP in 2012.”

Both the U.S. and European Union have banned the PFLP and identified it as a foreign terrorist organization.

In 2020, Berlin’s government sanctioned a 4-year ban on Khaled Barakat, reportedly the “coordinator” of Samidoun.
