The municipality of Luxembourg City initially informed feminist platform JIF that the owner of the Hamilius complex would not permit protesters to assemble there on 8 March.
Women’s rights group JIF had planned a women’s demonstration in the city on 8 March to mark International Women’s Day. Initially, they were led to believe they would not be able to use the space in the Royal Hamilius shopping complex due to objections raised by the owner.
However, the message from the municipal council has now changed. JIF told RTL the women’s rally would meet at Hamilius as planned; however, demonstrators were not permitted to protest at the site itself.
On Friday, following the initial news of the ban, Déi Lénk municipal councillor Guy Foetz wrote to the council demanding urgent explanations regarding the matter, after expressing concerns about the privatisation of the Hamilius area back in 2015 when the agreement was signed between the council and Royal Hamilius. At the time, Foetz said he was assured that Hamilius would retain its status as a public space.
Foetz has asked the council to clarify whether the Hamilius-Plaz is considered a public place which would fall under the council’s jurisdiction or not.
